Treat periodontal disease and enjoy oral health
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a potentially serious condition that if left unchecked can lead to other more severe oral health conditions.
What many people don’t realise is that gum disease can be well advanced before it’s identified. This is because the signs of periodontitis (gum disease) aren’t always obvious. In fact, regularly seeing the dentist at Figtree Family Dental, is one of the best ways to confirm whether gum disease could be an issue for you.
What causes gum disease?
Gum disease is caused by bacteria, which ultimately affects the gums and teeth.
Signs you may be affected by gum disease include: sore gums, bleeding when brushing teeth, and bad breath (halitosis). At your regular hygiene check we’ll confirm whether you have gum disease, checking for signs of infection that’s present in the gums, loss of gums around teeth, and loose teeth Like most health issues periodontitis presents symptoms first. And it’s these symptoms your dentist will be looking out for to put an early treatment plan in place.
How is gum disease treated?
It is never too soon to start treatment for gum disease. In fact, the sooner the better so that progress can be halted with an effective treatment plan.
During a preventive dental appointment we’ll clean the teeth of plaque and calculus, allowing us visibility into the extent of the condition. If infection can’t be remedied with improved oral health behaviors, we’ll present other treatment options, including medication. Surgery may also be necessary, particularly if there’s a need for rebuilding the gum structure and if tooth decay is present.
Treating gum disease: a vital key to good overall health
There is now science supporting the connection between oral health and overall health – and treating gum disease is an important element in this equation.
